There’s nothing quite like those first few days with your newborn—sleepy snuggles, tiny fingers, and all the love. But when it comes to booking newborn photos, most parents feel overwhelmed, underprepared, or just plain exhausted. The good news? With a few simple tips (and realistic expectations), you can have a smooth, stress-free session and walk away with photos you’ll treasure forever.
If you’re wondering when to schedule newborn photos, the sweet spot is usually between 5 and 14 days old. During this window, babies are sleepier, easier to pose, and still curl up naturally—ideal for those dreamy, snuggly shots you’ve seen online. After two weeks, many newborns start to stretch out more, become more alert, and may be fussier, making those classic sleepy poses harder to capture. To avoid missing that ideal timeframe, it’s best to book your session during your third trimester so your photographer can pencil you in around your due date.
One of the first decisions you’ll need to make is whether you want your newborn session at home or in a studio. If you love the idea of polished, posed portraits with professional props, backdrops, and a full newborn photography setup, a studio session might be the way to go. But if you’re after a more relaxed, natural feel or just don’t want to leave the house with a days-old baby—an in-home session lets your photographer capture real-life moments in your space. Both options are beautiful. It really comes down to your personal style and what feels easiest during those early days.

If you’re having your newborn photos taken at home, choosing the right spots makes all the difference. You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect house, just good natural light and a bit of tidying up. Spaces like the master bedroom, living room, or nursery often work best, especially if they have large windows. Your photographer will likely walk through your home to find the brightest, softest light and may move a few things around to make the setup work.
A quick clean is all that’s needed. Focus on clearing clutter like cords, laundry piles, or busy backgrounds. A neatly made bed with neutral bedding can become the perfect backdrop for baby snuggles.
The more relaxed you and your baby are, the smoother your photoshoot will go. You don’t need to follow a rigid schedule or pack a suitcase full of props—just a few simple preparations can make all the difference. Here’s how to get both baby and mum ready for the big day.
You don’t need to bring anything to your newborn session, but if there are special items you’d love to include, let your photographer know in advance. Sometimes it’s the little things—like a handmade blanket or a name sign—that make your gallery feel extra personal. Here are a few simple prop ideas that photograph beautifully and help tell your baby’s story.
Newborn sessions are slower paced and baby-led—meaning your little one is in charge. Most sessions take 1.5 to 3 hours, allowing plenty of time for feeding, changing, and soothing as needed. Your photographer will guide the entire process, using gentle newborn photography techniques to keep baby safe and comfortable throughout.
Expect lots of breaks and a calm, warm environment. Whether you’re in a studio or at home, your photographer may use soft white noise, a space heater, or swaddles to help baby stay sleepy. You’ll also have the option for parent and sibling photos if you’d like. No need to rush—these sessions are all about capturing this short, magical season just as it is.
For studio sessions, everything is taken care of—so you can just show up and relax. My premium newborn photography setup includes all outfits, props, and backdrops, thoughtfully styled to suit your preferences. These sessions take place in my warm, cozy studio in West Fargo and typically run up to 2 hours, giving us plenty of time to work at baby’s pace.
Each session includes professional editing and a print release, so you can download your images and print them however you like. You’ll also have the option to order prints through a professional lab for high-quality keepsakes. From posing cushions and wraps to soft lighting and white noise, everything is designed to keep your baby comfortable and your photos stunning.
If you’ve been wondering how to prepare for your newborn photoshoot, the best thing you can do is keep things calm and simple. These sessions are designed to go with the flow, so there’s no need to worry if things don’t go perfectly—because they rarely do (and that’s okay!). Crying, feeding, outfit changes—it’s all part of the experience, and your photographer is prepared for it.
Here are a few easy tips to help the day run smoothly:

Let’s capture those first tiny details while they’re still brand new.
Feed your baby right before the session to help them feel sleepy and settled. Dress them in a loose outfit or swaddle that’s easy to remove without disturbing them. Keep nappies, wipes, and a dummy nearby, and have a few sentimental items on hand if you’d like them included in the photos.
The ideal age for a newborn photoshoot is between 5 and 14 days old. Babies are typically sleepier and easier to pose during this window, which helps create those peaceful, curled-up photos.
Try to feed baby just before the session begins. A full tummy will help them settle into a deep sleep, making it easier to pose and photograph them.
Simple is best. Dress your baby in a loose onesie or swaddle to avoid marks on the skin. Many photographers provide wraps, outfits, and accessories, so you don’t need to bring much unless there’s something special you want to include.
Avoid bright or busy patterns, uncomfortable outfits, and overstimulation before the session. If you’re including siblings or parents in the photos, try to stick with soft, neutral tones that don’t distract from baby.
The best time is 1 to 2 weeks old (around 5–14 days). During this stage, babies are sleepier, more flexible, and more likely to stay calm during posing.
Some classic favourites include the “froggy” pose, taco/womb pose, and swaddled on a blanket or beanbag. Your photographer will always prioritize your baby’s safety and comfort when choosing poses.
The month doesn’t matter as much as your baby’s age. The earlier you schedule it after birth, the better. Most photographers recommend booking during your pregnancy to ensure a spot soon after your due date.
Tummy time usually starts from birth, a few minutes at a time while baby is awake and supervised. It’s not part of a newborn photoshoot but helps build strength as baby grows.
