Selecting A Maternity Photographer for Your Photoshoot

Hiring a photographer to capture your pregnancy journey will create lasting memories of this unique journey. Selecting the right maternity photographer is important to make sure you feel comfortable, confident and enjoy the final images for years to come. Here are some things to keep in mind when choosing a photographer.

Define Your Vision

Before you begin the journey of looking for a maternity photographer, think about what you want your images to look like. Are you looking for high end maternity with large gowns, lifestyle photography which documents the moment, or photography that is more posed? Also consider if you would like your photoshoot indoors or outdoors and factor in the weather. In Fargo, ND we never really know what the weather is going to do so always have a backup plan! By having a clear idea, this will help guide you in your search for your photographer.

Research and Review Portfolios

First you will want to look for a photographer that specializes in maternity photography. Any photographer can do maternity, but those specializing in it will be able to capture all the small details and have better posing to show off your baby bump. 

Each photographer has their unique touch and style to their photos. Be sure to review their portfolio to ensure they are able to capture the style of your vision. If you want an unposed look, but the photographer only has posed maternity in their portfolio, they might not be a match.

Check Reviews and Testimonials

Check out Google and Facebook reviews to see what past clients have to say. They can give you a sense of what to expect and help gauge if they are the right photographer. It will also speak volumes on their client experience. Don’t be afraid to ask around as Fargo is a big small town and someone you know has probably worked with them before!

Review Packages and Pricing

Some photographers have their packages and pricing available online and some require you to send them an email. Before booking, be sure you understand what comes with the package you are purchasing. Some photographers provide a limited number of digitals and some do in person sales that require a purchase above and beyond the session fee. Client Closet

If you don’t wish to buy a maternity dress or two just for pictures, reach out to the photographer to see if they offer a client closet. Many photographers, myself included, offer dresses at no additional charge for their clients. This allows you to save money on a dress that you will likely only wear for pictures and photographers typically have a wide range of sizes, colors and styles available. Overall, selecting a maternity photographer may seem challenging, but it doesn’t have to be! Utilizing all of the tips and tricks above should help narrow down your selection to a few photographers who fit your criteria. After narrowing down the options, contact each photographer to see if they have availability that works with you and your family.
