Celebrating your little one’s first birthday is a special occasion and what better way to celebrate than with a fun and messy cake smash session? These sessions are fun for both parents and baby and capture the joy of childhood. Here are some tips to ensure your cake smash session is a success!
Choose the right location
Cake smashes can be held indoors or outdoors so be sure to pick which location is best for the desired look and weather. Bright and uncluttered sets allow the baby to shine with their cake. If doing an outdoor session, be sure the space is safe for your little one to explore.
Pick the Perfect Cake
Picking the perfect cake can be hard, but it doesn’t have to be! Simple, 5-6” double layer cakes are the perfect size for your little one to smash. If you book a session with me, this is all taken care of for you and included in your cake smash session.
Dress for a Mess
When booking a cake smash session with me, the outfit is included and there is no worry on what they are going to wear! Your little one will likely be covered in buttercream even after cleanup, so be sure to bring an outfit the is ok getting dirty.
Plan for Cleanup
Buttercream typically leaves an oily texture so your little one will likely need a bath post session. Many times, there is buttercream everywhere including their hair!
Create a Fun Atmosphere
To assist with capturing smiles and laughs, please bring any special toys or objects so I can connect with them. If they have a favorite show, I can always play the theme song for them to dance to! When your little one is smashing the cake, be sure to not yell their name repeatedly as they typically become confused on what they should be doing.
Timing is Everything
Children do best when they are well rested and fed, so schedule your session for about an hour after they should wake up from their nap to enjoy the best session. Happy babies are more likely to play and have fun with their cake.
Give Your Little One Cake Prior to the Session
Many times, children have not had cake prior to their cake session and are unsure of it. The texture can catch them off guard and they don’t know how good it tastes! Giving them a cupcake a week or two prior will help alleviate any hesitation.
Implementing these tips and tricks will help ensure a smooth process for your cake smash session, but always know that young children can be unpredictable. If your child is still having a rough session don’t worry, I have some tricks up my sleeve!
